Risks in environmental health and workplace safety are complex. Albeit characterised by multiple uncertainties, their identification, assessment and management have been subject to a wave of “scientisation” characteristic of our modern societies. Quantitative approaches and empirical research destined to characterise, prevent and mitigate risks have mobilised a wide range of scientific disciplines.
Nonetheless, the limits of quantitative approaches remain important. Hence, there is ample room for more qualitative approaches, along with methods that take into consideration the role of socio-technical systems in the production of risks, their identification and control.
